The reality

What we hear every week.

The frustrations behind why businesses search for complete guide to business wifi in the first place. If any of these feel familiar, the fix is straightforward.

🪛

Consumer routers don't cover business premises

ISP-supplied consumer routers plus a couple of extenders create dead zones, dropped video calls, EPOS terminals losing connection. Business premises need business APs designed around the building.

📐

Coverage planned by guesswork instead of survey

Without proper coverage modelling — predictive analysis of AP placement, channel planning, interference identification — installs end up with gaps and overlapping interference.

🔓

Guest WiFi on the same network as business systems

Some installs put guest traffic on the same network as EPOS, accounts and staff devices — security and performance risk. Proper business WiFi uses VLAN segregation.

📱

Roaming that doesn't actually roam

Walking between floors or zones, your device should hand off between APs seamlessly. Done wrong, calls drop and connections stutter.

How it works

Business WiFi — the practical landscape

**Access Points (APs):** Business-grade APs (Ubiquiti UniFi, Aruba, Cisco Meraki) deliver coverage, capacity and roaming far beyond consumer kit. Typical SME deployment: 1 AP per 200-400 sqm of open-plan modern office; more APs for period buildings with thick walls. **Controllers:** central controller manages all APs as one system — configuration consistency, monitoring, firmware updates. Cloud-hosted or on-premises. **VLANs (segregation):** corporate, guest, EPOS, IoT, CCTV — separate logical networks on the same physical infrastructure. Security and performance both protected. **Captive portals:** branded login pages for guest WiFi, GDPR-compliant email capture, time-limited sessions. **Cabling backhaul:** wired CAT6 to each AP location (better than mesh wherever feasible). **Wireless standards:** Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the current SME default in 2026; Wi-Fi 6E adds 6GHz band for high-density environments. **Site survey:** done before install to plan AP placement against actual building.

What you get

The Telexico approach to complete guide to business wifi.

Six things our customers consistently tell us matter.

📐

Proper coverage modelling

Site survey identifies dead zones, interference, optimal AP placement — install runs against a plan, not guesswork.

🏢

Business-grade APs not consumer

Designed for business user density, longer firmware support, central management, proper roaming — different category of hardware.

🔒

VLAN segregation

Corporate, guest, EPOS, IoT, CCTV — separated where appropriate, secured properly, performance protected.

👥

Guest WiFi as marketing infrastructure

Branded captive portal captures emails for marketing, builds customer mailing list cleanly, GDPR-compliant.

📡

Central monitoring

Telexico-managed deployment with 24/7 AP health monitoring; UK engineers respond on degradation.

🔗

Integration with broadband and VoIP

WiFi sized to the broadband; QoS for VoIP on the managed router; coherent whole-network design.

Consultative, not commodity

Built around real UK premises

Different premises need different WiFi designs. Modern open-plan office: 2-4 APs cover most of it. Multi-floor Victorian conversion: APs per floor, careful placement around brick walls. Warehouse with steel racking: high-power industrial APs, mesh backhaul where cabling isn't feasible. Retail unit with EPOS, guest WiFi and music streaming: VLAN segregation critical. We design around the actual premises and operation.

Real examples

How it works for businesses like yours.

Three real-world setups we deliver across the UK.

💼

Small to medium offices 5-50 staff

2-8 APs covering open-plan or partitioned space, corporate and guest VLANs, central controller management.

🍽️

Hospitality with guest WiFi

Coverage for staff and customers, EPOS on separate VLAN, branded captive portal for guests, music streaming uninterrupted.

🏭

Warehouses and industrial premises

High-power APs handling steel racking and large open spaces, scanners and voice-pick devices supported, mesh where cabling isn't feasible.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I just use a good consumer router for my business? +

Different categories of equipment. Consumer routers handle 5-15 devices at home well; business APs handle 50-200+ devices, with proper roaming, VLAN segregation, central management, longer firmware support. At a business with 10+ devices and any expectation of reliability, consumer kit creates ongoing problems.

How many APs does my business need? +

Rough indicative: 1 AP per 200-400 sqm for modern open-plan office; 1 per 100-200 sqm for period buildings with thick walls; 1 per 300-500 sqm for warehouses; high-density zones (boardrooms, conference) need dedicated coverage. Site survey gives a firm number for your specific premises.

What's a VLAN and why does it matter? +

VLAN (Virtual LAN) is a logical separation on shared physical network infrastructure. Corporate VLAN for staff devices, guest VLAN for customer WiFi, EPOS VLAN for tills, IoT VLAN for sensors — each isolated. Means guest traffic can't reach business systems (security) and can't slow business operations (performance).

Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7 — which should I buy in 2026? +

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the practical SME default — proven, widely supported by client devices, mature firmware. Wi-Fi 7 hardware exists but client device support is still limited and price premium isn't usually justified for SME use cases. Most UK businesses are deploying Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E in 2026.

Mesh WiFi vs wired backhaul? +

Wired backhaul (CAT6 cable from each AP to the switch) is significantly better than mesh wherever cable runs are feasible — much better performance, no wireless capacity halving, no mesh-link interference. Mesh as a last resort where cabling genuinely isn't viable.

What's a captive portal? +

The branded login page guests see when connecting to guest WiFi — typically asks for email or social login, accepts terms, grants timed access. Builds your mailing list (GDPR-compliantly), separates guest traffic, limits abuse with time caps. Standard for any business with customer dwell-time.

How much does business WiFi installation cost? +

Indicative: project fee £500-3,000 for SME installs depending on AP count and cabling complexity; APs £150-400 each; optional managed service monthly £30-200. Bundled with Telexico broadband meaningfully cheaper. Real quotes against your specific premises.
