Different categories of equipment. Consumer routers handle 5-15 devices at home well; business APs handle 50-200+ devices, with proper roaming, VLAN segregation, central management, longer firmware support. At a business with 10+ devices and any expectation of reliability, consumer kit creates ongoing problems.
How many APs does my business need?
Rough indicative: 1 AP per 200-400 sqm for modern open-plan office; 1 per 100-200 sqm for period buildings with thick walls; 1 per 300-500 sqm for warehouses; high-density zones (boardrooms, conference) need dedicated coverage. Site survey gives a firm number for your specific premises.
What's a VLAN and why does it matter?
VLAN (Virtual LAN) is a logical separation on shared physical network infrastructure. Corporate VLAN for staff devices, guest VLAN for customer WiFi, EPOS VLAN for tills, IoT VLAN for sensors — each isolated. Means guest traffic can't reach business systems (security) and can't slow business operations (performance).
Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7 — which should I buy in 2026?
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the practical SME default — proven, widely supported by client devices, mature firmware.
