Starlink for Rural Businesses in the West Midlands — Is It Worth It?

📅 20 February 2025 ⏱️ 6 min read ✍️ Telexico Communications
Starlink has transformed rural connectivity. But is it right for your West Midlands rural business? An honest look at the speeds, costs and real-world performance.

Rural broadband has been a persistent problem for businesses across the West Midlands — particularly in Worcestershire, south Shropshire, rural Warwickshire and the Malvern Hills area. FTTC speeds in these areas can be as low as 2–8Mbps, and full fibre rollout is years away for many locations.

Starlink changed this in 2022–2023. Elon Musk's satellite internet service delivers genuine broadband speeds — 100–200Mbps download, 10–40Mbps upload — to virtually any location in the UK with a clear view of the sky. For many rural West Midlands businesses, it has been transformative.

What Speeds Can You Actually Expect?

In our experience installing Starlink for businesses across rural Worcestershire, Shropshire and south Warwickshire, real-world speeds are typically:

  • Download: 80–220Mbps (median around 130Mbps during business hours)
  • Upload: 8–30Mbps
  • Latency: 20–45ms (suitable for VoIP calls and video conferencing)

These are genuine broadband speeds — enough for a small office of 10–15 staff running cloud software, video calling and VoIP phones simultaneously.

What Does Starlink Cost for a Business?

ItemCost
Starlink Business hardware (dish + router)~£499 one-off
Professional installation (Telexico)From £150
Monthly subscription (Business tier)~£140/month

Is It Reliable Enough for Business Use?

Starlink has improved significantly since its initial launch. In our installations across rural West Midlands, uptime is typically 99%+ in normal conditions. The caveats:

  • Heavy rain and snow can cause brief signal drops (seconds, not minutes). The dish has a built-in heater for snow.
  • Tree obstruction is the most common issue — the dish needs a clear view of the sky. We use the Starlink app to check for obstructions before installation.
  • Peak time congestion — speeds can drop during evening peak hours in areas with many Starlink users. Less of an issue for business users who primarily use it during the day.

Can You Use VoIP on Starlink?

Yes — the latency of 20–45ms is well within the acceptable range for VoIP calls. We have Telexico customers running 8–10 concurrent VoIP calls over a Starlink connection with excellent call quality. We recommend the Business tier rather than the Residential tier for this use.

Who Is Starlink Best For in the West Midlands?

  • Rural farms and estates — farm offices, diversified businesses (glamping, events, farm shops) needing real broadband
  • Rural hotels, B&Bs and holiday lets — guests expect WiFi; Starlink can now deliver it
  • Rural veterinary practices — clinical software, CCTV, digital records all need reliable connectivity
  • Remote construction sites — temporary connectivity for site offices
  • Rural professional services — home-based businesses that need genuine business broadband
