Why CCTV Is No Longer Optional for Most Businesses
Business crime costs UK companies billions of pounds annually — theft, vandalism, fraud and employee-related incidents are all rising. Insurance companies are increasingly requiring CCTV as a condition of cover for retail, hospitality and warehouse businesses.
But modern business CCTV goes far beyond deterrence. With 4K cameras, AI-powered analytics, remote viewing apps and cloud storage, a contemporary system gives you real-time visibility of your premises from anywhere in the world.
Types of Business CCTV Camera
Dome Cameras
Dome cameras are ceiling-mounted, vandal-resistant and discreet. The dome housing makes it difficult to tell which direction the camera is pointing — a useful deterrent. Ideal for: reception areas, retail floors, restaurants, offices.
Bullet Cameras
Bullet cameras have a visible, elongated housing and are typically mounted on walls or ceilings outdoors. Their visibility acts as a strong deterrent. Ideal for: car parks, building exteriors, loading bays, entrances.
PTZ Cameras (Pan-Tilt-Zoom)
PTZ cameras can be remotely controlled to pan, tilt and zoom — allowing one camera to cover a large area. Ideal for: large car parks, warehouses, public areas.
4G/WiFi Cameras
Wireless cameras that connect via WiFi or 4G — no cable run required. Ideal for: temporary installations, construction sites, listed buildings where cable routing is difficult.
What Resolution Do You Need?
We install Hikvision 4K cameras as standard. Here is why resolution matters:
- 2MP (1080p): Adequate for general overview coverage. Cannot reliably read number plates or faces at distance.
- 4MP–5MP: Good balance of quality and storage. Suitable for most business applications.
- 4K (8MP): Exceptional detail. Can zoom into footage significantly and still read faces, number plates and text. Recommended for entrances, tills and high-value areas.
CCTV and GDPR — What UK Businesses Must Know
CCTV in a business context is covered by UK GDPR. The key obligations are:
- Signage: You must display clear signs informing people they are being recorded. Signs must be visible before the monitored area is entered.
- Data retention: Footage should not be kept longer than necessary. 30 days is standard for most businesses.
- Access control: Footage should only be accessible to authorised personnel.
- Subject access requests: Individuals have the right to request footage of themselves.
We advise all our customers on GDPR compliance as part of every installation. Non-compliance can result in ICO fines and reputational damage.
