What Is the Analogue Phone Switch Off?
The analogue phone switch off (also called the PSTN switch off or BT Stop Sell) is BT's plan to shut down the entire UK analogue telephone network โ known as the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) โ by January 2027.
This means every business and household in the UK that still uses a traditional copper landline must migrate to a digital (VoIP) phone system before the deadline. After January 2027, analogue lines will simply stop working.
What Happens If I Don't Switch?
If you're still on an analogue line when BT switches off the network, your phone simply stops working. There's no transition period, no grace period โ the line goes dead. This affects:
- Traditional landlines and ISDN circuits
- Fax machines connected to analogue lines
- Card payment terminals using phone lines
- Alarm diallers and lift emergency phones
- Door entry systems connected to PSTN
What Do I Need to Do?
Switch to a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone system before January 2027. This replaces your analogue line with a digital phone that works over your broadband connection. The process is straightforward:
- 1. Get a survey โ Telexico surveys your site and recommends the right system
- 2. Keep your number โ we port your existing number at no charge
- 3. Install new phones โ desk phones, app or both
- 4. Go live โ we manage the cutover so there's no downtime
- 5. Cancel old line โ we help you terminate your BT contract
How Much Does It Cost to Switch?
Switching to VoIP typically costs less per month than your current analogue line โ most businesses save 30โ50%. There's no big upfront cost. Telexico offers migration packages starting from ยฃ15 per user per month including unlimited UK calls, AI receptionist and full installation.
What About ISDN?
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) lines are also being switched off as part of the same programme. If your business uses ISDN for a traditional PBX system, you'll need to either replace the PBX with a hosted VoIP system or add SIP trunks to your existing PBX.
