What Is a Digital Landline?
A digital landline is a phone line that works over your internet connection (broadband) rather than the traditional copper telephone network. It looks and behaves exactly like a traditional landline โ same number, same desk phone โ but runs entirely on digital technology.
You might also hear digital landlines called VoIP phones, hosted phones or cloud phones. They're all the same thing: a phone that works over the internet.
Digital Landline vs Traditional Landline
The main difference is how the call travels. Traditional landlines use a physical copper wire and analogue signal โ technology unchanged since the 1800s. Digital landlines convert your voice to data and send it over your existing broadband connection.
- Cost: Digital landlines cost significantly less โ especially for call charges
- Features: AI answering, call recording, mobile apps โ impossible on analogue
- Flexibility: Keep your number, use any device, work from anywhere
- ready for the future: Already compliant with the 2027 PSTN switch-off
Do I Need to Change My Phone Number?
No. When you switch to a digital landline with Telexico, we port your existing number across at no charge. Your customers see the same number, nothing changes from their end โ you just get a better, cheaper, more feature-rich system on yours.
What Equipment Do I Need?
Most businesses use one of three options:
- IP Desk Phone โ looks like a traditional phone, connects via ethernet or WiFi. We supply Yealink handsets from ยฃ79
- Softphone App โ free app on your computer or mobile. Nothing to buy
- strong style="color:#E5E7EB">Existing Analogue Phone + Adapter โ some older phones can be adapted
Is a Digital Landline Reliable?
Yes โ provided you have a reliable broadband connection. Telexico recommends full fibre (FTTP) broadband for the best call quality, but standard FTTC broadband works perfectly well for most businesses. We also offer 4G failover so your digital landline keeps working even if your main broadband has an outage.
